Johann Joachim Quantz was, according to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, a German composer of and flutist; taught Frederick the Great to play the flute, and remained in his service from 1741 until death. Wrote about 300 concertos for 1 or 2 flutes; also hymns, songs, etc. Author of a treatise on flute-playing.
