Niccolò Antonio Porpora  (1686-1768)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Niccolò Antonio Porpora was an Italian composer; in London, his operas rivalled George F. Handel's in popularity. Was also church musician and, especially, singing-teacher; one of the most famous ever. Joseph Haydn, as a young man, was for a time his pupil, accompanist, and valet.
