Quoting briefly from notes in a Flanders Recorder Quartet programme, Tarquinio Merula was probably born in Cremona, Italy, the town which became the main stage for his musical career which he started there as a church organist. From 1621 he also served at the court of Sigsimund III of Poland. He also went to Bergamo but always returned to his native city. Merula was thought to the most sensitive counterpoint composer of his time. He developed the art of canzonas for four voices to new heights.
