According to The Oxford Companion to Music, Nicola Matteis was an Italian violinist who came to England about 1672 and astonished all connoisseurs of violin playing by his amazing technique (mentioned in Evelyn's Diary and North's Memoires of Musick. he published some fine violin compositions in London, as also songs and a theoretical treatise for guitar players. His influence upon the development of violin techniques was probably important.
His "Sonata in C-major for recorder and guitar" has been broadcast by Hans-Martin Linde.
