According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Orlando di Lassus was a Flemish composer. Choirboy in Mons, his birthplace; afterwards choirmaster at the church of St John Lateran, Rome, and then worked in Antwerp before taking service in the Bavarian court in Munich. He settled there (travelling to Italy, however) and died in Munich. His works, all for two or (usually) more voices, number more than 2000 and include madrigals and similar works to French, German and Italian poetry, as well as much religious music - Masses, motets, miscellaneous biblical settings in Latin, settings of various texts in Italian, etc. Was preoccupied with such religious settings towards the end of his life; latterly suffered from mental depression.
