According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Aram [Ilich] Khachaturian was an Armenian composer, pupil of Gnessin and Myaskovsky; aged 20 before he began professional study. Works, often influenced by Armenian folk-music, include piano concerto (originally with a part for flexatone, imitating Armenian folk-instruments), violin concerto, cello concerto, 3 symphonies; ballets "Gayaner" and "Spartacus"; music to Lermentov's play "Masquerade"; choral, piano, and chamber works.
