According to Nora Hulse in her 24 Piano Rags, May Irwin was an American entertainer born in Ontario, Canada. Together with her sister Flo sang and played the piano. By 1872 they were performing in the Adelphi theatre in Buffalo, New York. She is said to have been "the first red hot mamma". She enjoyed a long career until 1922 in the course of which she appeared on the New York stage. She is credited with a number of songs but of ragtime interest is her "May Irwin's Ragtime Dance (1906).
