According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Alan Hovhaness was an American composer of Armenian descent; also conductor and organist. Works, much influenced by ancient Middle Eastern music, mainly have Armenian titles - piano concerto (with strings) entitled "Lousadzak" (The Coming of Light), 17 symphonies; "And God Created Whales" for humpbacked whale solo (on tape) and orchestra.
