According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Paul Hindemith was a German composer - formerly violinist and viola player (soloist in first performance of Walton's viola concerto, 1929); teacher in Berlin from 1927. Banned by Nazis as musically degenerate (though not Jewish); taught in Turkey from 1933, settled in USA 1939. Noted teacher and theoretician. Composed for almost every type of music medium, and (in his earlier period) much music of deliberately functional intent, e.g. for pianola, and a musical game for children.
