According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, François Joseph Gossec was a Belgian composer, from 1751living in France (where he died); also musical organiser and teacher. Wrote ballets, chamber music, works for outdoor performances celebrating the French Revolution, etc. Innovator of orchestration and the mass use of instruments.
