According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Giovanni Gabrieli was an Italian composer, pupil of his uncle (Andrea Gabrieli) whom he succeeded as chief organist at St Mark's, Venice, 1585. Works include "Sacred Symphonies" and other church music for voices with instruments, often using antiphonal groups; music for instrumental ensembles; organ works. Teacher of Heinrich Schütz.
