According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, John Dowland was an English lutenist and composer, serving the King of Denmark (1598-1606) and other such patrons; achieved international reputation and had his music published in eight capitals. Became Roman Catholic and later Protestant again. Works are chiefly solo songs with lute, and lute solos; also wrote "Lachrimae, 7 passionate pavans .. for lute, viols, or violins", etc. Father of Robert Dowland.
