According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Carl Czerny was an Austrian pianist and composer of an enormous number of piano studies; also of many other piano works (e.g. fantasies on popular operatic and other tunes of the day) and of church music, etc. Pupil of Ludwig van Beethoven and himself a famous teacher - e.g. of Liszt.
