Home | Recorder Music | Composers C | Nicholas Chédeville (1705-1782) |
According to The Oxford Companion to Music, Nicholas Chédeville and his brothers Pierre (1694-1725) and Esprit P. Chédeville (1696-1762) were celebrated Parisian players of, and composers for the musette and vielle (hurdy-gurdy).
The sheet music Suite "la Presidente" edited by Carl Dolmetsch says further that Nicholas Chédeville and his brothers were also makers of many types of wind instruments. Through their great-uncle, Louis Hotteterre (Nicholas Chédeville's godfather and teacher) they were related to another family famous in the world of instrument making and playing. Although Nicholas Chédeville achieved his greatest reputation as a player of the Musette (French bagpipes) and many of his compositions were written for that instrument, he also took steps to meet the widest possible public demand by suiting some of his works to a variety of instruments including Vielles, Recorders, Flutes, Oboes, Pardessus de Viole etc., all of which appear at various times on his title pages.
