According to the Internet source given below, George Botsford was an American ragtime and popular music composer. He grew up in the Midwest, notably Iowa where he was exposed to the prevailing cake-walk type and period parlour music. After a formal musical education he moved to New York where he remained for most of his career. Whilst a bandleader or conductor he became known to a number of publishers who kept his compositions firmly in the public eye. Eventually he became an arranger for Jerome Remick. Today he is probably best remembered for his Black and White Rag and Grizzly Bear Rag which started a craze for animal dances including the Turkey Trot and the Fox Trot.
