According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, John Blow was an English composer, pupil of H. Cooke and others; teacher of Henry Purcell; organist at Westminster Abbey, 1668-79 (Henry Purcell succeeding him) and again, 1695-1708. Works include English and Latin anthems, services, odes on the death of Purcell and other occasions (10 for New Year's Day); keyboard pieces and songs; masque "Venus and Adonis".
