According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Irving Berlin [originally Israel Baline] was a Russian-born composer resident in USA from 1893. Composer of popular songs markedly successful from "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (1911) and including the now perennial "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas" (from film Holiday Inn, 1942); his musical play "Call me madam" features an ocarina.
