Dvorak's Greatest Symphonies, August 31, 2000
Reviewer: Neal Schermerhorn from MA USA
Everyone goes on and on about the 9th. Yes, it's a great symphony, but a bit overplayed. The 8th, on the other hand, is a fantastic work which still sounds fresh to the listener 100 years after it was written. If you're interested in learning about the 8th symphony, seeing the scoring of that famous Largo in the 9th, or simply are curious about the way Dvorak scored for the orchestra, this edition of these two symphonies needs to be in your library. Conductors know that Dover editions are wonderful inexpensive alternatives to "Urtext" editions, and are ideal for initial study, building a library, and even use as a conducting score in many cases. They're great volumes, they're published well, they look and feel great. These two symphonies should be represented in any classical music lover's recording collection, and the scores make excellent listening companions. If you can read the music, and especially if you might ever have to conduct these works, this edition is a must-buy.
